Which Filament Survives a Lebanese Summer?

PLA deforms in a parked car in Beirut. Here is what heat and coastal humidity actually do to printed parts, and which material to pick instead.

The short answer

PLA starts to soften around 60 °C, which a car parked in the Lebanese sun exceeds easily, so anything left in a vehicle or in direct summer sun should be PETG rather than PLA. Coastal humidity is the second problem: filament absorbs moisture from the air and prints badly once it has, so spools need a sealed box with desiccant rather than an open shelf.

Two things in the Lebanese climate break printed parts, and neither is obvious until it happens to you: the inside of a parked car, and the air itself.

Heat: the dashboard test

PLA is the default filament for good reason — it is cheap, prints beautifully and holds detail. Its one real weakness is heat. It begins to soften somewhere around 60 °C, and a car parked in the sun on a July afternoon in Beirut comfortably passes that on the dashboard. Humidity: the invisible one

Filament is hygroscopic — it pulls water out of the air. On the Lebanese coast, where summer humidity sits high for months, an unsealed spool can absorb enough moisture in a few weeks to change how it prints. The water flashes to steam at the nozzle, and the symptoms are unmistakable once you know them.

  • Popping or crackling sounds while printing.
  • Fine strings and whiskers between separate parts of the model.
  • A rough, foggy surface instead of a clean glossy one.
  • Parts that snap under a load the same filament handled last month.

Storing filament properly in Lebanon

  1. Keep spools in a sealed container — a lidded plastic box with a clip seal is plenty, an expensive dry box is optional.
  2. Add silica gel. The colour-indicating kind tells you when it is saturated, and it can be dried in an oven and reused.
  3. Reseal after every print rather than leaving a spool on the machine for a month.
  4. Buy what you will use within a few months. A cheap spool bought in bulk and left to absorb a summer is not a saving.

A spool that has already gone damp is usually recoverable: several hours in a filament dryer, or in an oven at a low temperature, drives the water back out. Prevention is easier.

Frequently asked questions

Will a PLA part melt in a car in Lebanon?

It will not melt, but it will soften and deform. PLA begins losing rigidity around 60 °C and a car interior in direct summer sun exceeds that easily. Use PETG for anything that lives in a vehicle.

Is PETG waterproof enough for outdoor use?

PETG handles rain, sun and heat far better than PLA and is the right choice for outdoor parts in our range. For a part that must hold water, printing alone is rarely watertight — it needs thicker walls and usually a sealant.

How long does filament last before humidity ruins it?

Sealed with desiccant, years. Left open on a shelf through a Lebanese summer, a few weeks is enough to change how it prints, and PETG and TPU absorb moisture faster than PLA.

Can wet filament be saved?

Usually. Several hours in a filament dryer, or an oven at a low temperature, drives the moisture out. Storage is the fix; drying is the recovery.

Do you print ABS or ASA?

Not currently — our range is PLA, PETG and TPU. If your part genuinely needs the heat resistance of ABS or ASA we will tell you rather than substitute something that will deform.
